The Barnyard has its first robotics team comprised of Keyannah Allen, Jaylen Bishop, and Keyshawn Felton. The robotics team will participate in the First Lego League Robotics Tournament, along with teammates from Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, at Carrollton in January.
Arts to Literacy and The Other Side teamed up over the summer to offer filmmaking classes at The Barnyard.
Coconut Grove Cares filmmaking students Michelle Ballard, Demetrius Cobbs, Richard Cook, Howard Homer and Chris James along with Junior Counselors Shaun Harper and Alexis White were honored as mini-Oscar winners by Arts to Literacy and The Other Side at Miami's City Hall. Sylvia Jordan, Coconut Grove Cares, Executive Director, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Best Child Advocate from Arts to Literacy founders Joseph C. Grant, Jr. and Mary McBeth.
Sylvia Jordan received the Elizabeth L. Virrick Community Service Award.
In October, Girl Scout Cadettes and Seniors from Troops 306, 347 and 918 visited The Barnyard as part of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute Class of 2011 Take Action Project.
In December, The Barnyard children were featured performers for the City of Miami's Holiday Tree Lighting program.
Mia Spigelman conducts, Girls Who Rule the World, a weekly leadership development program exclusively designed by her for The Barnyard's young girls.
The Barnyard's kindergarteners receive physical education instruction from volunteer Nicole Gorordo and tennis lessons are being offered by Kelly Mulligan to The Barnyard children.
Miami Heat all-star Dwyane Wade treated The Barnyard children to the South Florida All-Star Classic in October.
The Barnyard youth participated in the Coconut Grove Children's Mosaic Mural project and Coconut Grove Cares provided workspace and technical assistance. The beautiful marine-themed mosaic mural is showcased at the U.S. Post Office at 3191 Grand Avenue in Miami Florida's historic Coconut Grove.
